Digital imaging of ancient textual heritage:
technological challenges and solutions
28–29 October, 2010, Helsinki, Finland
*** Registration closed ***
Digital imaging of the ancient textual heritage written on different materials such as papyrus, parchment and paper, etc., is often a challenging task. The nature and fragile condition of the object (papyri, manuscript, printed book) limit the degree of manipulation, requiring non-invasive and innovative digitization solutions. Palimpsests, carbonized papyri and watermarks present their own unique difficulties for imaging technologies and processes. Texts that have faded over time or have been written over by later scribes cannot be seen by the human eye or cameras cannot record what the eye can see. More often than not, imaging requires the application of unique and even exceptional digital technology. In addition, material may be stored at remote locations with limited facilities for setting up equipment. Onsite digitization is a further challenge in preserving the cultural heritage.
The symposium welcomes contributions from researchers to share experiences, discuss problems encountered and present solutions in the areas of digitizing and digitally restoring ancient documents, manuscripts and objects of art. The topics include, but are not limited to:
- Imaging Methods: UV/IR/Multispectroscopy, fluorescence, X-ray, X-ray fluorescence; scanning and digital photography; optics and sensor design
- Special Cases: palimpsests, watermarks, carbonized papyri, miniatures
- Digitization Set-ups: experiences from short and long term installations in demanding environments
- Image Processing and Digital Restoration Methods
- Holistic Digitization: materials, 3D models, inks
- Quality of Digitization
- Automated Digitization of Ancient Material
